How to Choose a Personalised Children's Book: 8 Things to Check

Name-only, choose-a-character or drawn from a photo? What to look for in a personalised children's book — the story, the pictures, privacy, print quality, delivery and price — before you buy.

Personalised children’s books range from a name dropped into a standard story to a book drawn around one child. They can look alike online, so here is what to check before you buy — whichever shop you choose.

1. How is the child put in the book?

There are three kinds:

  • Name only. The child’s name is printed in the text; the pictures are the same for everyone. Quick and cheap, but the child in the pictures isn’t them.
  • Choose a character. You pick a hair colour, skin tone and so on, or choose from a set of ready-drawn children. A good choice when you don’t have a photo or would rather not share one.
  • Drawn from a photo. The child is illustrated from a photo you upload, so the face, hair and smile are theirs on every page. This is the most personal, and the one children recognise themselves in instantly.

We make the second and third kinds: most of our books are drawn from a photo, and some — like the first Christmas choose-a-character book — let you pick a character instead.

2. Can you see it before you pay?

The best way to judge a photo-based book is to see the character first. At Cozy Bee you can upload a photo and see your child as a storybook character, then on the cover of the book, free and without signing up. If a shop shows only stock pictures of other children, you’re buying blind.

3. Is the story any good without the name?

Read a few pages of the sample. A good personalised book is a good book first: a real story with a beginning, a middle and an end, rhythm that reads aloud well, and something to talk about. The name should fit the story, not be the whole of it.

4. Who wrote and checked it?

Ask whether a person reads every book before it’s printed. Pictures made with AI can go wrong in small ways — an extra finger, a changing jumper — and someone should catch them. Every Cozy Bee book is written, checked and corrected by our team before it goes to print; here’s how we make a book.

5. What happens to the photo?

You’re sharing a picture of a child, so check:

  • Is it kept private and never shown publicly?
  • Is it used to train AI models? (It shouldn’t be.)
  • When is it deleted?

We keep photos in private storage, never use them to train AI and delete them after 30 days if you don’t order, or 180 days after an order. The full detail is in our privacy policy.

6. Paper, binding and size

Look for the page count, paper and cover options. A hardcover lasts as a keepsake; a softcover is lighter and cheaper. Small sizes (around 14×14 cm) suit babies and nappy bags; larger ones (20×20 to 28×28 cm) suit bedtime reading together. Our books have about 30 full-colour pages with a soft matte finish, as softcover or hardcover.

7. Delivery, and how long it really takes

A personalised book is made to order, so add the making time to the post. Check where it’s printed: printed in your own country usually means faster, cheaper delivery. Ours are made within one working day, then printed near you — in the UK for UK orders, with free UK delivery. Before Christmas, check the last order dates.

8. Price, and what’s included

Compare like for like: the size, the cover and the delivery charge. A low headline price can grow at checkout. Look for a dedication page (a message from you) and the languages offered — useful for families who speak more than one.

A quick checklist

  • Drawn from a photo, choose-a-character, or name only?

  • A real story that reads aloud well?
  • Checked by a person before printing?
  • Clear privacy: no AI training, photos deleted?
  • Hardcover option and a sensible size?
  • Printed near you, with honest delivery dates?
  • The full price including delivery?

Questions people ask

What is the best personalised book for a child? One where the story is good in its own right and the child is really in it — ideally drawn from their photo, with their name throughout and a message from you on the first page. For babies, choose short rhyming lines; for children of three to eight, a proper adventure.

Are personalised books worth it? For gifts, yes: children love seeing themselves as the hero, and a personalised book is kept long after toys are outgrown. Check the preview and the print quality first.

How long do personalised books take to arrive? Usually within a week in the UK: a day or so to make, then two to three days in the post. Allow longer in December and for overseas delivery.
