Personalised Book Gift Ideas by Age (0–12)

Which personalised storybook suits a baby, a toddler, a school starter or a ten-year-old? A simple guide by age, from first birthdays to dream-job stories.

A book with a child’s own name and face in it is one of the few gifts that gets more special with time. But what works for a one-year-old is not what a nine-year-old wants to be seen reading. Here is how we’d choose, age by age.

Babies (0–12 months): a keepsake for the grown-ups, too

At this age the book is read to them, so it can be a little longer and a little more sentimental. Look for:

  • Big, bright pictures with one clear idea per page — babies follow faces and strong colours.
  • A dedication page you’ll want to read again in fifteen years. A message from you, a grandparent or a godparent turns a storybook into a keepsake.
  • Sturdy print. A hardcover survives teething, bath-time splashes on the table and being carried around by an older sibling.

Our 1st Birthday Storybook was written for exactly this: a gentle walk through the Wishing Forest, with the birthday baby drawn as the hero.

Toddlers (1–3): repetition, animals and “that’s me!”

Toddlers love hearing the same story again and again — and pointing at themselves on every page. Short sentences, a friendly animal and a clear adventure work best. A 2nd birthday story or a dinosaur adventure with a triceratops friend is a safe bet.

Tip: choose a photo where their face is clear and they’re looking at the camera. The character is drawn from it, and a happy, well-lit face gives the best result.

Pre-school and reception (3–5): big moments and big feelings

This is the age of firsts: the first day at nursery or school, a new sibling, a first proper birthday party. A story can make a nervous moment feel exciting. Our First Day at School book was written to turn “I don’t want to go” into “look, that’s me in my classroom”.

Themes that land well now: superheroes (being brave and kind), unicorns (gentle magic) and anything with their favourite animal.

Early readers (5–8): let them read it themselves

Once children start reading, a book about themselves is a strong reason to try. They know how the sentences start — “Mia kicked the ball…” — which makes the words easier to tackle. Pick a story about something they already love:

Older children (8–12): choose the story, not the “baby book”

Older children can be wary of anything that feels young. What works is a theme that feels like theirs — sport, dream jobs, art — and a book they can show friends without embarrassment. Let them choose the story and the photo. A custom story, written around a real event in their life, is also a lovely idea for this age.

Choosing the format

  • Printed hardcover — the keepsake. Best for birthdays, christenings and anything you want on the shelf for years.
  • Printed softcover — lighter and easier for small hands; great for everyday bedtime reading.
  • PDF — for a last-minute gift, or for family abroad. You can print it at home or read it on a tablet.

Every Cozy Bee book comes in seven languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Turkish), which makes it a thoughtful gift for bilingual families.
