First Birthday Keepsake Ideas They'll Treasure
Thoughtful first birthday gifts that last longer than the party: memory books, personalised stories, time capsules and more — plus how to make one really personal.

A one-year-old won’t remember their first birthday — which is exactly why the best first-birthday gifts are the ones that keep the day for them. Toys are outgrown in months; a keepsake is opened again at eighteen. Here are ideas that last, from simple to special.
1. A letter for their future self
Write a letter to be opened on their 18th birthday: what they were like at one, what made them laugh, what the world was like that year. Ask grandparents and godparents to add one each. It costs nothing and becomes priceless.
2. A time capsule box
Fill a sturdy box with a newspaper from their birthday, a photo from the party, a lock of hair from the first haircut and a few notes from family. Seal it and pick an opening date.
3. A personalised storybook with them as the hero
A storybook where the birthday child is drawn as the main character, with their name on every page and a dedication from you, is both a gift and a record of who they were at one. Read at bedtime now, it becomes a keepsake later — many families bring it out again at every birthday.

4. Hand and footprints
Salt-dough or clay prints of tiny hands and feet capture a size they’ll never be again. Do them on the birthday itself and write the date on the back.
5. A “first year” photo book
Choose one photo from each month of the first year. Twelve pictures side by side show just how much a baby changes — and how much you’ve all been through.
6. A tree or a plant that grows with them
Plant a tree in the garden (or a hardy house plant if you don’t have one) and take a photo of the child next to it on every birthday.
How to make any first birthday gift more personal
- Add a dedication. A few lines in your own words — “To our little bee, on your very first birthday…” — turn a present into a keepsake.
- Date everything. In twenty years, “Mia, age 1, 14 March” on the back of a gift is worth more than the gift.
- Involve the family. A message from each grandparent, or a photo of everyone at the party, means the gift carries the whole day.
